“The First Supper (Because No One Talks About the Prep Work)
”A Blog of Truth, Humor, and Well-Folded Linens
📍Location: Bethany, the Cleanest Home in Judea
🫓 Featuring: Cousin Yeshua, Mary (the sitter), Lazarus (the soon-to-be-resurrected), and 24 unnamed dinner guests who didn’t RSVP
✨ Martha Speaks:
“Let’s begin with the facts. There was no Last Supper without a First Supper. And I cooked it.
I have fed prophets, healed the sick, bandaged sandal-blisters, and poured wine for those who would later spill it during foot-washings.”
“You want to know what Gospel looks like? It’s hummus, fresh figs, and lamb stew at the end of a 13-mile walk in 90° sun.”
“When I said, ‘Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work alone? ’It wasn’t bitterness — it was exhaustion. I’d been hosting a dinner party for the entire Kingdom of God and my only help was out back having a mystical swoon on the patio.”
🍞 The Bread and the Beloveds
“You see loaves and fishes? I see my kneading table.
You see a moment of miracle? I see the yeast that rose while no one was looking.
You read about disciples reclining at table? I remember them tracking mud on the floor I swept.”
🫧 The “Worried and Upset” Moment
“I wasn’t chastised. I was seen.
Yeshua — my cousin, my teacher, the Living Word —looked me in the eyes with that maddening compassion of his and said:
‘Martha, Martha…’
And let me be clear —He didn’t say it like a rebuke. He said it like he’d known me since the Womb of Immah(which, let’s be honest, he had).”
💀 The Lazarus Incident (a.k.a. The One With the Smell)
“Yes, I said, ‘He’s been dead four days — there will be a stench.’
Because I’m practical, not pessimistic.
Even miracles need logistical support. Someone had to keep the tomb supplied. Someone had to light the lamps, comfort the guests, clean the linens after a resurrection got mud everywhere.”
“I believed. I always believed ~ But belief doesn’t keep the house running. I did that, too.”
🙏 Final Words from Martha, Scroll One
“So now, let it be known: I was never less faithful. I was foundational.
Mary knelt at his feet. I built the floor beneath them.
Yeshua wept for Lazarus. I brought the cloth.
And when he rose…I had a fresh robe waiting.”
🌸 Reflection for You:
When you feel unseen for the work you do —the meals, the tending, the hidden labor, the unglamorous showing-up —remember Martha.
Not as the one who missed the moment…but as the one who held the moment long enough for others to enter it.
You may not always sit in the spotlight, but your service is the sanctuary. You, too, are gospel
